Recent Chicago Cubs rumors suggest the team isn’t going after one of the two big free agents. Do they have their eyes set on the top relievers instead?
After years of speculation on whether the Cubs would pursue one of these two, fans will surely be disappointed in the team if they don’t make a splash this winter.
While the owners and front office may not want to cough up something like the $300+ million it’ll take to land either Harper or Machado, there will almost certainly be some major moves in Wrigleyville this winter.
Although the Cubs are likely looking for ways to jumpstart an inconsistent offense that stagnated down the stretch, maybe the impact addition they’re considering will be in the bullpen.
In fact, at the General Manager Meetings last week, Cubs’ GM Jed Hoyer talked about the need to add more bullpen depth.
The key is not just to have a good bullpen all year, but you’ve got to have that bullpen pitching well down the stretch, and part of it is having the depth to not overuse guys… Our bullpen performed exceptionally well last season, but we have to make sure it does that again by adding enough depth. I’m actually impressed our bullpen held up as well as it did given the short starts early in the season.
If the team is looking to make an impact addition in the bullpen, there’s no bigger free agent prize among relievers than Craig Kimbrel.
