David Bote hits two-run triple to ignite Cubs

CHICAGO — The Cubs knew Pirates starter Trevor Williams would be tough. They got a break in the second inning, which helped them open a 2-0 lead against the right-hander on Thursday night at Wrigley Field.

Kyle Schwarber led off the Chicago second with a fly ball to right-center. Center fielder Starling Marte appeared to call for the ball, but it dropped in front of him, just in front of the warning track, as right fielder Jose Osuna came charging over. Schwarber was credited with a single, and Ian Happ followed with a single.

Williams, who entered with a 1.00 ERA in 11 starts since the All-Star break, then struck out the next two batters, but rookie David Bote lined a triple down the left-field line on the seventh pitch of his at-bat to drive in both runners. It was Bote’s first extra-base hit since Sept. 14, against the Reds.
