Cubs in the Off-Season Leagues

Good morning, and a Happy New Year to everyone at Cubs Den! As the regular season moves into the final weekend for Cubs in the off-season leagues, there have been some surprising appearances and re-appearances. For more information, take a look inside today’s report.

Dominican Winter League

Leones del Escogido

Escogido improved their record to 2-2 in round-robin play on Thursday with a 6-0 victory over Este. First baseman Ryan Court contributed by going 1-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored. Escogido 6 – Este 0

A pitched battle erupted in the DR on Saturday night as the Leones needed twelve innings to finally prevail over Licey 5-4. Ryan Court moved back into the lead-off spot and went 1-for-4 with two walks, a stolen base, and a run scored. Escogido 5 – Licey 4; 12 innings

Mexican Pacific League

Tomateros de Culiacan

In an intense match-up of two playoff bound teams on Friday, Culiacan was able two scratch out two late runs to edge Obregon 2-1. The Tomateros needed closer Casey Coleman for some extra duty, as he had a strikeout and pitched around a hit and two walks in 1.2 scoreless innings for his 22nd save. Culiacan 2 – Obregon 1

Obregon rode a five-run second inning on Wednesday to blow past Mexicali 9-3. Entering the game in the second inning playing second base, Carlos Sepulveda also would move over to shortstop and went 1-for-3 with a double in the victory. Obregon 9 – Mexicali 3

On Saturday, the Yaquis bounced back from a tough loss on Friday to double-up Culiacan 4-2. Making another step in his recovery from surgery, Carlos Sepulveda received his first start of the season at second base. Sepulveda would go 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in the victory. Obregon 4 – Culiacan 2

Roberto Clemente League

Criollos de Caguas

Caguas went toe-to-toe with front running Mayaguez on Sunday, only to come up short in a 6-5 loss. Victor Caratini lined up at catcher and was 2-for-3 with a solo home run. Clean-up hitter Vimael Machin went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Mayaguez 6 – Caguas 5

The Criollos had some hope on Wednesday as they took a 4-3 lead over Mayaguez in the sixth. But in the end, the bottom fell out and Caguas wound up losing 7-4. Victor Caratini moved over to first base and went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI in the loss. Mayaguez 7 – Caguas 4

The Creoles could not hold on Thursday against Mayaguez as four late runs scuttled their efforts in a 4-3 loss. Vimael Machin played first base and was 1-for-4 in the game with an RBI. Mayaguez 4 – Caguas 3

In a make-up of Friday’s rain-out, Caguas made the most of eight hits on Saturday in shutting out Carolina 4-0. Vimael Machin was moved up to second in the order and was 2-for-5 with an RBI, while clean-up hitter Victor Caratini went 0-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. Caguas 4 – Carolina 0

In their regularly scheduled game on Saturday, the Criollos used two fifth inning runs to get past Santurce 2-1. Vimael Machin paced Caguas as he went 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Caguas 2 – Santurce 1

Gigantes de Carolina

Carolina was full-throttle from the very start on Thursday in their 10-1 win over Santurce. Backed by 18 hits, the Giants were able to coast, allowing Raidel Orta to pitch the final three innings. Orta struck out two and only walked one batter as he picked up the long save. Carolina 10 – Santurce 1

Venezuelan Winter League

In a real nail-biter on Wednesday, Lara was able to be one run better as they defeated Zulia 1-0. Big lefty Luis Lugo started the seventh and struck out two while walking a batter in 1.1 scoreless innings.  Lara 1 – Zulia 0

Navegantes del Magallanes

Magallanes was in real trouble against Aragua on Friday until their offense bailed them out for a 9-5 victory in Game 1 of a doubleheader. Erick Leal was the starter, supplying four quality innings as he gave up a two-run homer in the first, but struck out five over the length of his performance. Magallanes 9 – Aragua 5; Game 1

In the nightcap on Friday, the Navegantes were not able to keep pace as the fell 6-4 to Aragua. Coming over from the Dominican Republic, Daury Torrez was credited with a hold even though he served up a solo home run in pitching the sixth inning. Aragua 6 – Magallanes 4; Game 2

Australian Baseball League


The hard luck for Geelong-Korea continued on Sunday as they lost to Canberra 6-2. Right Fielder Kwang-Min Kwon remained one of Geelong’s more consistent players as he was 1-for-4 with a double in the loss.  Canberra 6 – Geelong 2

After getting a rare win earlier in the week, it was back to the same on Saturday as Geelong fell to Melbourne 8-1. Kwang-Min Kwon was once again in right field, going 1-for-4 and driving in the one run for the Koreans. Melbourne 8 – Geelong 1

Iowa RHP Daury Torrez was signed by Navegantes del Magallanes of the Venezuelan Winter League.
