Cubs in the Off-Season Leagues

Good morning! As the regular season wound down for the Cubs in the off-season leagues, a couple of major league veterans made their mark. For more details, take a look at today’s report.

Dominican Winter League

Leones del Escogido

A steady offensive output on Monday allowed Escogido to double-up Cibao for a 6-3 victory to close out the regular season.  Ryan Court played a big part as he was 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base, and two runs scored in the win. Escogido 6 – Cibao 3

Playoff time in the Dominican Republic began on Friday in round-robin format. On Saturday, the Leones used superior pitching to limit Este to five hits in blanking them 3-0. Ryan Court helped sustain the Escogido attack by going 1-for-3 with a walk in the win. Escogido 3 – Este 0

Mexican Pacific League


Culiacan kept the pressure up all night on Tuesday as they blew away Navojoa 13-1. Even though it was a non-save situation, closer Casey Coleman got in some work as he struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning. Culiacan 13 – Navojoa 1

On Thursday, the Tomateros stepped on the gas after the third inning and put away Navojoa 6-3. Sandwiching two strikeouts around a fly out in the ninth, Casey Coleman racked up save number 21. Culiacan 6 – Navojoa 3

In a duel of closers on Friday, the Tomatomen came out on top over Jalisco with a 3-2 win. Trailing 2-0 in the ninth, Casey Coleman gave Culiacan a chance by retiring the Charros in order. The Tomateros then rallied against MLB veteran Sergio Romo for three runs to give Coleman his third victory of the season. Culiacan 3 – Jalisco 2

Roberto Clemente League

Criollos de Caguas

It was another crushing victory for Caguas on Sunday, as the Creoles flatted Carolina 10-2. Catcher Victor Caratini was an on-base machine in going 2-for-3 while drawing three walks. Caratini also both drove in and scored a run. Vimael Machin was at first base and was 2-for-6 with a triple and three RBI in the win. Caguas 10 – Carolina 2

On Tuesday, the Criollos played a make-up game from December 14 and edged out Santurce 7-5. Zach Hedges was on the mound to start the game and allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk in 3.2 innings. Victor Caratini moved to first base and was 2-for-3 with a walk, belting a two-run homer. Caguas 7 – Santurce 5

Wednesday saw the Creoles break out their pitching as they blanked Santurce 5-0. The Caguas pitching staff got support from first baseman Vimael Machin, who was 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two runs scored. Designated hitter Victor Caratini went 1-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. Caguas 5 – Santurce 0

After spotting Carolina two runs in the third inning on Friday, Caguas revved up their offense to double-up the Giants 4-2. Victor Caratini lined up at third base and was 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored, while first baseman Vimael Machin was 0-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored. Caguas 4 – Carolina 2

The Criollos could not keep up with high-flying Mayaguez on Saturday but was respectable in a 2-1 loss. Vimael Machin remained at first base and was 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base. Mayaguez 2 – Caguas 1

Gigantes de Carolina

Carolina took it on the chin on Sunday as Caguas had their way in a 10-2 defeat of the Giants. Raidel Orta came on in the ninth to mop up against his former teammates and was touched for two earned runs on two hits and a walk in an inning of work.  Carolina 2 – Caguas 10

Venzuelan Winter League

Navegantes del Magallanes

A steady offense and defense helped Magallanes to a 5-4 victory over Aragua on Thursday. Erick Leal got the start and was effective, striking out four and allowing only a walk and a hit in four scoreless innings. Magallanes 5 – Aragua 4

Australian Baseball League


The only game in town on Thursday night, Geelong-Korea put up a good fight but bowed to Canberra 6-4. Kwang-Min Kwon remained productive as he was 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, and two runs scored. Kwon was also unsuccessful in an attempt to steal home. Canberra 6 – Geelong 4
