Chicago Cubs Pick Up Jose Quintana’s Contract Option

The Chicago Cubs have picked up the team option for pitcher Jose Quintana, the club announced Wednesday.

Quintana, who started 32 games for the Cubs in 2018 and posted 4.03 ERA, has team options in his contract for both the 2019 and 2020 seasons, and the Cubs’ decision locks him in for a $10.5 million salary next season.

The Cubs acquired Quintana in a 2017 trade with the Chicago White Sox. He has posted a 20-14 record and a 3.93 ERA in 46 career starts with the North Siders.

The Cubs also announced that they had claimed left-handed pitcher Jerry Vasto off of waivers from the Kansas City Royals. Vasto made his big-league debut last season, posting an 8.31 ERA in six appearances, but was much better with the Royals in September, with a 2.45 ERA in 3.2 innings of work.

The Cubs’ 40-man roster now stands at 35 players as free agency nears.
