Ben Zobrist still swings a quick bat for the Cubs at age 37

Ben Zobrist’s healthy left wrist has allowed him to become of the top hitters in the National League.

At the same time, Zobrist’s reflexes have prevented opposing pitchers to pound him with inside fastballs. The switch-hitting 37-year-old entered Monday’s game with a .314 batting average, third in the league.

“The bat is still quick,” manager Joe Maddon said before the game. “He doesn’t have to cheat to get to a fastball. That’s kind of nice. A lot of times when a guy gets to be that age, he has to cheat to get to velocity, but he does not. That’s why you’re seeing those results.”

In other health news, reliever Pedro Strop remains a longshot to pitch before the end of the regular season. Strop suffered a left hamstring strain on Sept. 13 and has yet to throw off a mound.
