4 Down: Cubs, Earl Thomas, Buck Showalter, Piping noise for a home game | Sports

The Cubs won 95 games, tied for the most in the National League through 162 games. But they lost two home games – the division tiebreaker and the wildcard game – and were eliminated. After losing 2-1 to the Rockies in 13 innings, manager Joe Maddon said “We left too much chicken on the bone,” which we guess means the Cubs didn’t score enough runs.

The Seattle Seahawk broke his left tibia last week, ending his season and perhaps his time in Seattle. As he was carted off the field, he put up his middle finger to his sideline. Thomas and the Seahawks had been embroiled in a contract dispute, and Thomas held out of training camp. The Seahawks defense, once known as the Legion of Boom, is more like the Legion of Gloom these days.

The Baltimore Orioles manager was fired this week after the team lost 115 games. He was named manager of the year in 2014 and had the Orioles in the playoffs as recently as 2016. But when you finish 61 games out of first place, you’re probably not coming back, no matter how good a manager you are.

4. Crow noise for home game

The Los Angeles Chargers practiced with crowd noise for Sunday’s game against the Raiders. But there’s a weird twist here – it’s a home game for the Chargers, and typically crowd noise is only an issue when it’s a hostile crowd. In this case, the Raiders have a lot of fans in Los Angeles, and the Chargers have few fans anywhere.
